It is effective for aerobic-muscle exercise, depression-anxiety disorder

A clear study found that combination of aerobic exercise and muscle exercise significantly reduces mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders.

Psychiatric researchers at University College London in the U.K. reported in the latest issue of the international journal "BMC Medicine" that they checked 150,000 people's exercise and mental health and analyzed their mental health seven years later.

Depression and anxiety disorders are becoming fatal diseases of mankind, and in Korea, the number of patients with depression increased by about 32% in five years to 796,363 last year according to the National Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service's statistics. A similar number of patients with anxiety disorders are estimated to be treated at hospitals.

Numerous studies, including the results of cohort studies conducted by Harvard University for more than 80 years, have shown evidence that exercise is good for mental health, but some questions remain. They include how to measure the amount of exercise, how to overcome mental disorders and improve mental health, and how to specifically measure what exercise improves mental health.

Researchers at University College London selected 152,978 people from bio banks across the UK in August 2009 to check their exercise status and mental health until December of the following year. Six minutes later, he checked his heart rate and tested his grip. In addition, through a clinical questionnaire, anxiety disorders and depression were checked and overall mental health was investigated.

Seven years later, the researchers asked participants to fill out the same clinical questionnaire and analyzed the effect of exercise on mental health by reflecting age, sex, previous mental health issues, smoking history, income, physical activity, education level, family history, and diet.

The results were quite amazing. Those who did aerobic and muscular exercise together had a 98% lower probability of developing depression and 60% lower incidence of anxiety disorders than those who did not exercise. Those who exercised only one of the two had a lower incidence of mental disorders than those who did not exercise at all, but the degree was much lower.
