Why do you believe that pretty food is good for your health?

In a paper titled "Pretty Healthy Food: When and How Does Aesthetics Boost Health Perception?" published by the American Marketing Association, researchers at the University of Southern California reported that people regard pretty food as healthier than food that looks ugly.

According to the researchers, U.S. consumers are in a flood of fast food advertisements, receiving about 7,000 advertisements for food and restaurants every year. The same goes for our country. Adverts such as pizza and chicken that make your mouth water attract people every moment. By the way, do people think it's good for their health by watching a pizza commercial with shiny cheese, fruits, and slices of ham? If so, why?

The researchers asked the researchers to show beautiful food and other foods and evaluate whether they help people's health by considering balance and order systematic patterns according to the "classical aesthetic principles." For example, Avogado toast was divided into two types and objective information such as an ingredient table and price information was first presented. Then, when I evaluated whether the two types were healthy, people responded that pretty toast (as if they forgot objective information) was more nutritious and seemed to be healthy with less calories. Similar results were found in evaluations of other foods. In the experiment, freshness, size, and dose had little effect on health perception.

Professor Linda Hagen (photo), who organized the study, explained the results of the experiment in two aspects of aesthetic principles.

First, when the human brain appreciates beautiful artworks or sees beauty, the reward area of the brain activates and feels innate happiness in itself. But seeing pretty food doesn't make it considered healthy, as people tend to regard pleasure and usefulness as mutually exclusive. For example, food is either delicious or healthy, not both.

Second, in terms of the 'principle of historical aesthetics', people tend to look favorably at ideal types in nature, such as balance, order, and systematic pattern. Food photos or descriptions that resemble nature make food look more natural and therefore healthier.

The results of the experiment showed that the second principle works more for people in terms of "food and health" than the first principle.

Professor Hagen said, "This experiment showed that differences in evaluation of nature lead to differences in evaluation of health perception. Traditional aesthetics will be a great reference for marketing or public health officials."

"If you market food according to the traditional aesthetic principles, you can induce a change in attitude toward food by only making subtle changes at low cost," he said. "At the same time, we need to prepare for this because this method may lead to negative dietary habits."
